There is a famous story about a luxury liner that ground to a halt while sailing the Mediterranean. Someone remembered a retired master engineer who lived in Cyprus and the company had him flown out to the liner. When he went down to engine room he felt the pipes with his hands, took out a stethoscope and listened to the pumps, and finally placed one of his hands on one of the gauges with his eyes closed. After a moment of silence, he took out a little rubber mallet and tapped on the gauge and the ocean liner roared to life.
The company was furious when the old engineer submitted a bill for $10,000 for his work and returned it to him and obnoxiously demanded an itemized bill. They weren’t expecting what they got in return.
Here’s the bill the engineer submitted…
For tapping with a little rubber mallet: $0.05
